John Niland John Niland.
Inside.
Pianist, composer and Eelman Records label co-founder, John Niland recorded "inside" at Marmalade Studios, Wellington in 1985 and this is the first time this album has been available on CD. "inside" comprises all original compositions that were largely inspired by New Zealand's landscape ... the rugged coastline of Wellington, the tidal estuary of Cable Bay, Nelson and the beautiful bush setting of the Blackbridge Road rehearsal room of The Hulamen (of which John was a member). Rather than try to copy the paino styles of his musical influences Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans, John Niland, in his own words "strives to integrate aspects of sounds I like into my playing". Side One of the original LP is a trio setting with John on acoustic grand piano, Ross Burge on drums and Rob Mahoney on double bass. The four tracks are inside, Blue 4 Henk, 10 A.M., and Sense Of Duty. Side Two tracks are all solo piano pieces ... To Triumph, Birth Of A Fantail, From The Boatshed, Captured and It's Nice To Be Home. Accessable jazz from a very creative musician, who is currently recording new material for release shortly. "Inside" was nominated and featured as a finalist in the category "Jazz Record of the Year" 1986, NZ Music Awards.

April Phillips April Phillips.
April.
All proceeds from April are being donated to the Make A Wish Foundation ("granting the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy", as it is explained in the liner notes). And certainly that is to be admired. And it is reason enough, I believe, to support this artistic endeavor. But, April is also a lovely album, because April Phillips can really sing. And her voice is put to perfect use across a mix of jazz and pop standards, from "Old Devil Moon" and "It Had To Be You" to "Someone To Watch Over Me" and "The Man I Love". Backed by the best local jazz musicians (Norman Meehan, piano/keyboards;Johnny Lippiett, saxophone; Lance Philip, drums) April's voice dominates the rich layered tune. And Norman Meehan's sympathetic, gentle arrangements perfectly account for this. fans of vocal jazz will be impressed with this local talent - and what a novel way to support a wonderful cause.

Charmaine Ford Charmaine Ford.
Blues For Guppy.

Charmaine Ford has been composing since her early teens and has traveled to England courtesy of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). As a teenager she achieved national success, winning titles at the Tauranga National Jazz Festival and was selected for the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra. The album opens strongly with "Truly Yours" and right from the Latin-tinged intro it's easy to tell this trio play as a true ensemble. Great piano improvisations encompass all 88 notes of the keyboard while there's a variety of colours from Canadian born drummer Mark Nelson who at 20 years of age is a real natural, making drumming sound so effortless. For those many jazz fans who have followed Charmaine's career, or new fans in the making here is a debut album you will be delighted with!

Andrew London Andrew London.
Are We Having Fun Yet.

This CD is a lively and energetic mix of jazz standards that derived from earlier Radio New Zealand recordings, under the watchful and discerning eye of jazz pianist and record producer Dick Le Fort. Andrew was first invited to record in 1987 and did subsequent recording sessions in 1990 and 1992. Versions of Nat King Cole's "Sweet Lorraine" and Hoagy Carmichael's "I Get Along Without You Very Well" rub shoulders with lively renditions of Michael Franks' "Popsicle Toes" and Paul McCartney's "Honey Pie" so almost the entire 20th Century was covered. This CD was released privately in 1997. Featuring Terry Crayford on Bass and Keyboards, Mastered and compiled by Nigel Stone.
