Matt Hay Matt Hay.
Inside Stories.
Inside Stories marks Matt Hay's debut as a frontman. He was founder member and harmonica player in Cool Disposition, one on the most visible blues acts on the national scene in the 90's. Matt has penned an album of songs that don't pretend to be anything other than what they are - ballads from the burbs. You wil find meloies here taht stik in your brain, choruses you'll want to sing along to, lyrics that are timeless and poignant, offering quietly astute commentaries on life's little ups and downs. Co-produced by Hay and Darren Watson, Inside Stories is an album that stands proudly alonside the best in roots rock. You may be reminded at times of John Hiatt, JJ Cale, Midge Marsden or the Warraths , but you will also hear a fresh individual voice, singing stories he know inside and out.

The Cattlestops The Cattlestops.
Back To Rosetta Rd.
Kiwi-based country/swing group The Cattlestops have excelled with this sophomore release. The album plays with the sheen of international quality production and overall presentation nothing short of excellent. Songwriting duties were shared between bass player James Cameron and guitarist Andrew London with the diverse range of tracks fitting together well. With a swinging groove throughout the style falls under the umbrella of country but has moments of simply great Kiwi folk writing and cool jazzy tunes. Two highlight tracks are "Someone Been Pickin' On Me Blues", reminiscent of CCR's "Born On The Bayou", and "Raumati Rag", a guitar instrumental track show-casing guitarist London's boundless talent. Cameron's jazz sensibility shines through on "It Just Happens", which pays homage to the late Green MP Rod Donald. The Cattlestops have achieved a worldly sound whilst still keeping it Kiwi. Clocking in at just under 45 minutes the album feels as the songs have been written without being forced and the result is a collection of songs that will appeal to all Kiwi music fans of all styles. The Cattlestops The Cattlestops.
Cattlestoppin'.
The Cattlestops began in 2004 when Kapiti musicians Andrew London, Dave Berry and James Cameron discovered that Colleen Trenwith fiddler with the legendary Hamilton County Bluegrass Band had recently move to Otaki. With the addition of Evan Williams on drums the Cattlestops were formed. Cattlestoppin' features original tunes from both London and Cameron and some favourite standards from the live repertoire which reveals a decided move towrds the jazz/countr hybrid known as Western Swing. In this very traditional genre, jazz standards lik Louis Jordan's Choo Choo Ch'Boogie and Bobby Troupe's Route 66 are given the Western treatment of a chugging two-beat rhythm section over which soloists perform jazz-style improvisations.

Donna Dean Donna Dean.
Money [The Extended Version]
It is the New Zealand way that some of our best artists are internationally recognised before they are well-known at home. Donna Dean is the latest, a singer-songwriter with an international career. Recording and performing in Nashville and successfully touring and selling records in Europe, is success that doesn't come to many New Zealand artists. When the group who helps yo and plays on your record happens to be the legendary Amazing Rhythm Aces, it's not hard to understand that there are powerful forces at work. Donna Dean's songs shine in this collection. She sings stories that grow and draw you in and don't let you go. She has a style and a voice that stopped being shy some time ago, and now delivers with a confidence and maturity built from years of sitting on a stage and engaging an audience.

Laura Collins Laura Collins.
One Feather At A Time.
Collins'album focuses on the relationships between friends and lovers, often in waltz time, and has echoes, both lyrically and vocally, of recent work by singer/songwriters Mary Chapin Carpenter and Caitlin Cary. Providing the mainly acoustic backing are the likes of ex-Warratahs bassist Clint Brown and multi- instrumentalist Simon Burgess, while guitarist Matt Newman's arrangements work well in this context. Emotive and intimate, 'One Feather at a Time' is a Kiwi slice of alt country (if there is such a thing) that deserves to find an audience amongst Americana listeners.
