Tuwhare.
In 2000 Charlotte Yates directed the successful "Baxter" project, which saw contemporary New Zealand musicians putting song to the words of James K. Baxter. Now, commissioned by Toi Maori Aotearoa, she does the same thing with acclaimed poet and author Hone Tuwhare. With a new cast of artists (save Mahinarangi Tocker and Yates herself) including Don McGlashen (The Front Lawn, Muttonbirds), Te Kupu (Dean Hapata of Upper Hutt Posse), Strawpeople, WAI, Goldenhorse, Graham Brazier and more. Tuwhare's words are transformed into at times astounding lyrics for songs that cover different styles, from rock to electronica, Traditional Maori to Hip-hop and everything in between. It's probably not in the spirit of such a compilation to pick out highlights, but needless to say Dallas Tamaira (aka Fat Freddys Drop's Joe Dukie) never disappoints, and Goldenhorse make "O' Africa" sound like it would be right at home on their recent album. There are also some surprises from artists I wasn’t so familiar with; Whirimako Black's voice can almost bring tears to your eyes, while Yates turns Tuwhare's words into an effortless pop vocal hook in the almost Fur Patrol sounding "Mad". Te Kupu's "Speak to me, brother" shows how Tuwhare gets an often-poignant message across by using humour (something Te Kupu is familiar with himself); "Dominate? That's a big word, brother." I think if Hone Tuwhare had come along thirty years later, he could've been a talented MC. Like "Baxter" this album is a fantastic document of not only New Zealand music but also New Zealand art and culture.

LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)oa is pleased to announce the release of The Return of Fly My Pretties: A CD and DVD ‘live-record’ of the musical collaboration which was performed, filmed and recorded across eight unforgettable shows at The Paramount (Wellington) and Hopetoun Alpha (Auckland) in September and October 2005. Fly My Pretties first entered our hearts and minds in 2004, with the idea from The Black Seeds’ front-man Barnaby Weir and co-conspirator Mikee Tucker, to assemble a talented and exciting group of Wellington-based musicians for a ‘one-off’ project. The objective: To meet, exchange ideas, and then perform and record the results in front of a live audience.

This 14 track (71 minute) cd features new Zealand artists who performed in the ambient zone at The Gathering 2000. The Gathering is NZ's largest outdoor dance party and is held over four days during New years attracting between 8-10,000 people. Half the tracks are unreleased and exclusive to this album. Leading A Horse To Water features established artists such as SJD, Dub Asylum and Charlotte 90 as well as showcasing other sonic explorers from Aotearoa proving that the ambient scene in NZ is alive and well and indeed flourishing. This is a perfect come down album after a hard night's activities or to gently massage the brain on a chilled out afternoon.
